Any guy who sings for the ladies and raps for the fellas is already pretty dynamic so the only flaw here may be fan’s expectations. Then again, Drake’s boundaries are pretty vast to begin with. You won’t find any cuts on the album that pushes his creative boundaries or reside outside of his comfort zone. If there is anything negative to be said for Drake’s album Views it’s that it’s just that a Drake album. In what sounds like a Kanye produced track, Drake continues his lyrical acuity on the title track Views (actually produced by Maneesh) with lines like “You don’t worry about fitting in when you’re custom made” and again on Hype “That boy light as Michael Jackson / But on verses he be blackin'”.
Lyrically, Drake delivers throughout the album. If you’re a purist of any of the genres (hip, hop, R&B and Reggae) then you probably don’t feel Drake put Respeck on it (all tree of them.) If you’ve had a few drinks and are in the club on vacation however then congratulations, one of these songs just became your new favorite. These offerings are a clear and present attempt at international crossover appeal. Reggae Drake (as I like to call him) takes yet another stab at reggae inspired, hip hop/R&B fusion rap, or whatever you want to call it, on songs like Controlla, One Dance, and Too Good. Songs like Still Here, Grammys and Hype speak to Drake’s more edgy side while Keep the Family Close, Fire and Desire and several others cater to Aubrey’s sonically laid back nook where he and main producer 40 are most at ease.ĭrake a.k.a. Hotline Bling aside, there are a slew of songs on Views from the 6 (literally and figuratively) that will most likely be on every radio station for the next few months. The rap/sing king is back, doing his thing on this latest offering. Well if Drake is one of your favorite hip hop artists and you’ve grown accustomed to what he’s been serving for years then you will not be disappointed with Views from the 6. Have you ever walked into one of your favorite restaurants, ordered your favorite meal and got exactly what you asked for? Of course you have! It is after all one of your favorite restaurants and the establishment would not have earned that reputation had it not been consistently satiating your appetite.
